Sunday Scribblings: A Writer's Room

This week's prompt for Sunday Scribbling is Writing. Because I am a teacher of writing it was a big part of my week with my students. They were eager to begin again with stories of summer adventures, funny incidents, and what they learned the first week of school.

When this prompt came up I thought about places to write. Many of my students love to word process on the computer. Some of them like a composition book with a colored pen and a place on the floor. Others like notebook paper and a desk away from others where it is quiet. Places to write can vary from person to person.

I always thought I needed a certain place to write. With a writing room and great pens, pretty journals, and a pottery mug I knew words would just flow from my mind to my pen. It just doesn't work that way for me. I don't think it works that way for my students either. Sometimes I do my best writing in a noisy room while sitting in an uncomfortable chair. I have also written on a napkin while eating in a restaurant. Classical music and a window with a view don't always put me in the writing mood. Often it is inspiration from another writer or a passage of good literature that gets my creative juices going.

When I have a conversation with my mom when doing a memoir piece I will jot down words and images. I will let them sit for a few days while I percolate the ideas in my head. Then I will put the words to a piece of writing. I will sometimes be sitting at a desk. Often I will have the laptop at the kitchen table. I just get the ideas down when they formulate in my head.

When people want to write, whether it is in a journal or working with prose or poetry, they may think they need a writer's room in order for the flow of words to come. There are no two people with the same needs. Writers I have researched have a variety of ways they work. Some did have a special room only because they were working at home and need space from the family. Others walked in the woods or along the beach. Some wrote while the family was busy creating life around them.

The one thing I have learned from blogging and from reading others' blogs is that it isn't so much about a room or the right tools, or the cool pens or journals. It is carving out the time to do it every day. My writer's room is giving myself room in my day to write. It doesn't always have to be an hour. Some days it may only be time for brainstorming, but the ritual of doing it each day begins the writer's life. No special place, no perfect desk, no fancy writing program on my laptop, but thinking, formulating ideas, finding time, and trusting yourself as a writer.

Bouquet #19: Today A New Sun Rises

" Today a new sun rises for me; everything lives, everything is animated, everything seems to speak to me of my passion, everything invites me to cherish it." Anne de Lenclos

Saturday Meme from Dog's Eye View

my yard, fall 2oo6

Dancin' Fool at In the Pink created this mime and I received it from L^2 at Dog’s Eye View. It is an interesting combination of questions to answer on a week-end morning.

01. If you could have super powers what would they be and what would you do with them?
I would like to have arms strong enough to fly so I could get places I really want to go faster.

02. Were you to find yourself stranded on an island with a CD player...it could happen...what would your top 10 bloggers island discs be?

James Taylor: (live)
Carly Simon: Into White
Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor: Appalachia Waltz
Arthur Fiedler/Boston Pops: Gershwin Greatest Hits
Carole King: Tapestry
Simon and Garfunkel: The Concert in Central Park
Barbra Streisand: One Voice
Tony Bennett: Unplugged
Arthur Grumiaux, English Chamber Orchestra: Bach: Brandenburg Concertos
Out of Africa soundtrack

03. If you were a smell what would it be?
Definitely lilac because there has never been a sweeter smell that takes me back to Grandma’s springtime yard in Spokane, my Mom’s backyard, and now my lilac garden.

04. What bird would you most like to be?
The bluebird because they are beautiful, they are the Idaho state bird, and they mate for life.
05. If you were a bird who's head would you poo on?
I would poo on anybody’s head that works in a school system but doesn’t like kids.
06. Are there any foods that your body craves?
My body craves crisp apples in October, chocolate hearts in February, freshly picked raspberries with cream in June, and my Mom’s homemade orange rolls any time anywhere.
07. What's your favourite time of year?
It is fall for many reasons. I love the changing of the trees, Indian summer, the smell of leaves burning, cooler Sunday evenings in front of the fireplace outside, fleece vests, sweaters, and camping in the inland empire.

08. What's your favourite time of day?
It is the time between dinner and going to bed when I wind down, blog, read, write, and converse with my husband.

09. If a rest is as good as a change which would you choose?
I would choose rest. I have learned in the last few years that I need to give myself time to rest in the week or I am just not good for anybody! It is unnecessary to go until my energy is gone, but then keep going more. It is not productive, healthy, or fun ( my students will attest to this!)

10. If you could have a dinner party and invite any 5 people from the past or present who would they be (living or deceased)?
I would invite five people that have written books about the craft of writing so each of them could share their wisdom around the dinner table. Then we could share our writing and get feedback from each other. Those five would be Julia Cameron (The Sound of Paper),Anne Lamott( bird by bird) ,Georgia Heard (Writing Toward Home), Steven King (On Writing), and Bonni Goldberg (Room to Write and Beyond the Words).

Dog’s Eye View already asked other bloggers to answer the questions, but as is the meme tradition, I'll go ahead and tag a few more to play along too (no obligation, of course): Silver Valley Girl, Princess Molly, Pinehurst in My Dreams, Shelby, and anyone else who would like to answer these questions too. Have fun!

Canyon Creek Campground: September Week-End

I wrote this poem a few years ago in hopes of capturing images of quiet camping week-ends in the fall. It is my favorite time of year to be out camping. It is cooler, quieter, and so beautiful.

Canyon Creek Campground
September Weekend

The sun bleached table sits
Under a towering tamarack
with the trickle of a creek footsteps away.

The familiar smell of smoke lingers from conversation last night,
fresh campfire coffee,
and bacon frying in the rusty cast iron skillet over the coals.

The blaze of orange sumac and the last, tart huckleberries
hang on nearby branches
reminding us to bid farewell.

The crisp air of sunrise greets me-
Your slow smile, a soft flannel shirt,
and the promise of a cool, peaceful season.

Good morning autumn.

Ten Things About Kiki Aru: My Niece the Birthday Girl!

Today my niece Kiki Aru celebrates her twelfth birthday. One thing about Kiki Aru is she has always been creative. In the picture above we gave her crayons and paper at my wedding celebration when she was two to keep her entertained!
Kiki Aru always loves to laugh. She loves funny jokes and stories that make her laugh. She has also shown me things online that make me laugh! We love to laugh together.

She also loves to learn. The picture above was when she was in kindergarten. Since she was very young she has always liked to be challenged to learn new things.

Cards are a favorite game for Kiki Aru. When she was younger she loved to play FISH, but now we all love a rousing game of Spoons.

This is a picture a few years ago when we took her and her sisters camping. They loved climbing, building a fire, playing charades, and going swimming.
She also loves to play on the computer and when she would come to visit my house when she was young I would always grab some favorite computer discs from school and off she would go! Now she loves the fact I have high speed internet.
Kiki Aru is musically talented. She learned to play the ukulele and serenaded me at my fiftieth birthday party.
She also loves to sing at the Sixth Street Theater in Wallace, in family performances at holidays, and at her church.
A proud day for the whole family was when she was chosen to be one of the eighteen students from Idaho to ask the astronauts a question while they were at the international space station in August. Here she is practicing at the Discovery Center of Idaho in Boise. Her question she asked loud and clear was, "How long had you wanted to be an astronaut?"
Here is JEJ's favorite picture of Kiki Aru that my friend Elinor caught at our wedding celebration. She has always loved being adventurous, whether is was going through this gate at two, learning to ski, or riding her bike down a steep hill.

Happy Birthday to You Kiki Aru! I wish I could be there to celebrate. To read more about the birthday girl go to her mother's blog here.

Wecome Back to School!

Today started out overcast with the promise of rain. Then the sun broke out as I drove to school and it was a hot late summer day that welcomed our students back to school. Here was the sign I created to welcome my excited middle school students today. It was a good start of the school year. Students were sharing their new school supplies with me since they know my love for them ranks up there with chocolate and coffee. I heard stories about summer adventures, shopping trips to the mall, and a student driving (underage), but she said it was an emergency!
I did a post last spring about the disarray of my papers and my desk. My goal is to keep my teacher space a big more organized this year. This is how it looked after ten minutes. I was even able to keep it this way through lunch. Progress! As writers I am encouraging my students to look for "wondrous words" . As we build a wall of these words by the computers it will enable them to try strong words in their writing. "Hot" in teen terms was nixed from the list today. Also, "pimping" my car was another one that just wouldn't fly. That sent them off to dictionaries to find more wondrous words. I even learned a few new ones I can use in my writing.

My new Mary Jane Crocs passed the test today. I was on my feet most of the day and as I am blogging tonight I am happy to announce that my feet don't ache. My colleagues that had their fancy, dancy high heels on today found out early that that wasn't going to work. I make a practical fashion statement when I teach. My middle school girls still just don't get it. Oh well... I don't think they would like to see "Ms. Crabby My Feet Hurt"!

It was a good day. I can't wait to visit, share, and teach more tomorrow.
