Sibling Assignment #111: " So Come With Me, Where Dreams Are Born"

Silver Valley Girl gave us our sibling assignment this week. Think back to a movie you remember watching at our house in Kellogg, name the movie, what it was about, and what makes you remember watching it at the house. Raymond Pert and Silver Valley Girl will post theirs soon.

The movie I remember watching was "Peter Pan".  NBC decided to do a television version of "Peter Pan" starring Mary Martin. She had created the role on Broadway. The first telecast was in 1960. Unlike CBS and "The Wizard of Oz", NBC only showed it a few times after that debut. I think the time I remember watching it was in 1963. It was memorable.  We recognized Mary Martin from the album covers of "South Pacific" and "The Sound of Music."  I was finding it hard to picture her playing a boy named Peter Pan. Play it she did. It was taped as a life performance which was also something I remember. We didn't often view a movie on T.V. that seemed more like it was being played on a stage. I didn't even care if you could see the wires when she was flying.

We may have still had a black and white television, because I think I recall watching in black and white. What I also remember was that it seemed like we got to stay up really late to watch it There is much that is vivid in my mind about that movie.  I believed that if I went with Peter Pan dreams would be born. It appeared to be such a happy place.

I also loved the music.  I remember singing the songs, especially "I'm Flying" long after the movie was over. That magical quality of Peter Pan has stayed with me and wondered what it would be like to visit a place like Never Never Land. Were dreams really born there? Did you never grow up? Remember Peter Pan singing " I Don't Wanna Grow Up"?

I thought Mary Martin was talking just to me when she asked if I believed in fairies. How many children clapped their hands in the living rooms at home to keep Tinker Bell alive? Would I always be happy if I flew with Peter to Never Never Land? Would life be this amazing adventure? Reality hits at the end of the movie when he finds Wendy all grown up. I remember finding it hard to say good-bye after watching this movie.  I didn't want my grandmother, cousins, or new friends at camp to forget me.

I went back in time for a bit tonight and enjoyed many numbers from this movie.  I will never tire of hearing Mary Martin sing "Never Never Land." Enjoy!

Sibling Assignment #110: Enjoying the Quiet

 Raymond Pert gave the sibling assignment last week:

The surprising, shocking, soaring Idaho Vandals are off to a 7-2 start and, for me, it stirs memories of Vandal football in the late 60's through the early 80's. How about you? I attended many football games at the University of Idaho. I remember RP and  my Dad coming down for a game. I remember Boda Bags, and I remember the smell of the Kibbie Dome. Surprisingly, what I remember most are the football game days when I didn't attend games. During my college years I had a part-time job at the WHEB ( Women's Health Education Building). I worked in the The Cage in the locker room which was the place equipment and towels were handed out. The locker room led into the pool. There were three gyms within the building, plus courts for other sports. It was a perfect job.

When I worked in The Cage on Saturday game days it was peaceful. I could hear the fans cheering and the band playing faintly over at The Dome. Hardly anybody came into the WHEB on these Saturdays so I had the place to myself. I remember loving that time to revive myself. I often studied, got caught up on reading, or just enjoyed the quiet. I washed, dried, and folded many white towels on those Saturdays. I walked around the building once an hour to count the people using the facility.  After hectic weeks of college life, it was a nice break even though it was a job. I knew I was missing a fun time at the game with my friends, but most of the time I didn't mind at all. I just enjoyed the quiet.

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Our week-end was very enjoyable with our friend Tracy here to visit. She really loves to spoil the critters with treats, special attention, and lots of love. When she had to leave today, it was a sad state of affairs for all the dogs and a few of the cats! Shelby and Annie kept watching out the window to see if she would return. Maybe she just went to the store to get more of those yummy treats.

Kit was exhausted this afternoon after posing for the camera 24-7 this week-end.

Finally, Shelby gave up also and decided she needed a rest.

William tried to retreat to the greenhouse to feel sorry for himself. He doesn't have his new friend that loves to hold him and pet him.

I am sure things will get back to normal soon.

First Snow at Canyon Creek

We took our friend Tracy for a photo hunting car trip today. At our house it was cold, but sunny and beautiful. When we headed west on Highway 20 within seven miles we hit snow. Beautiful snow with sunshine to illuminate the gorgeous whiteness.

A Day Filled With Friendship, Photohunting, Relaxing and Another Keeper from the Recipe Box

 Today has been a day I needed! Walking in the rain and taking pictures, sitting by the fire in the gazebo, and sneaking in a nap have been just a few activities Tracy and I both needed as we continue to enjoy her visit. I am revisiting another keeper from the recipe box for dinner tonight. This recipe originally came from Taste of Home, but a friend of mine that caters loves to use this as a dish that can be prepared ahead of time.

Slow-Cooker Enchiladas
1 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 can ( 16 oz.) pinto or kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can ( 16 oz.) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can ( 10 oz.) diced tomatores and green chilies, undrained
1/3 cup water
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack Cheese
6 flour tortillas ( 6 or 7 inch)
In a skillet cook beef, onion and green pepper until beef is browned and vegetables are tender; drain. Add the next eight ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Combine cheeses. In a 5-qt. slow cooker,layer 3/4 cup beef mixture, one tortilla and about 1/3 cup cheese. Repeat layers. Cover and cook on low for 5-7 hours or until heated through. Yield: 4 servings.

Pend Orielle Caramel French Toast: A Keeper from the Recipe Box

When company comes I love to try new recipes and keepers that I use again and again. The following recipe was in the Spokesman Review at some time. It was a perfect make-ahead dish for brunch this morning. Our guest Tracy gifted us with lovely tulips last evening so I had to catch pictures of them also.This recipe is certainly worth a try! Very easy and very tasty.

Pend Orielle Caramel French Toast
From "Northwest Mornings Cookbook" Inn at the Lake, Newport, Washington

2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
14 slices cinnamon-raisin bread
6 eggs
2 cups milk
2 cups light cream
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
Garnish:
3/4 cup finely chopped pecans
Sour cream

In a saucepan, combine the corn syrup, brown sugar, and butter. Melt until smooth and bubbly. Spread in the bottom of a greased 11x7 inch glass baking pan. Overlap bread slices like dominos in pan over syrup.
In a bowl mix eggs, milk, light cream, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Pour over bread. Cover with foil and bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes, then remove foil.Bake for 10-15 minutes more or until puffed and golden brown. Slice and invert pieces to serve. Garnish with sour cream. Top with small bits of pecans.

Yield: 8 servings.
