Sibling Assignment #92: A One-of-A-Kind Annie

Silver Valley Girl gave the sibling assignment this week. "Write a poem, essay, song, or story about one of your pets, and how having that pet has made your life better." I will connect my siblings' posts when they are done.

A One-of-A-Kind Springer Spaniel (photo by raymond pert)

Annie is a flushing out a mouse from under the deck ‘til it’s found hunter,

With a love and protect you show of loyality,

An obsessed with scraps, squirrels, Lily, and stray cats

One-of- a-kind springer spaniel.

A search until she finds kitty candy bars and rabbit pellets,

Plus springing in the air looking for Shelby until she tires,

And if she hears the sound of the clippers she trembles

kind of springer.

A can’t wait to get a drink of water in the lake while camping ,

With hears the sound of the treat jar from outside kind of ears,

And a listen while she sings morning dog songs

One–of-a-kind springer spaniel.

A needs lots of love and attention springer,

A run through the fields with ears flying in the summer critter,

And wants to ride in the car even if it means just going to the garage kind of springer.

Annie is a hide in the carrier while I yell during a Zags game girl,

A sleep on the bed and snuggle in the afternoon dog,

And a watch in the window for hours for me to come home

One-of-a-kind springer spaniel.

I am a love Annie ‘til I die kind of dog owner,

Enjoying the spirit and silliness of this springer spaniel,

Knowing she is waiting with her body wiggling when I arrive home every day,

Annie is a gift…. a one-of-a-kind springer spaniel.

First Garden Walk: Signs of Spring

I was finally able to do my first garden tour without wearing knee high boots! Even though I was snowed on while doing it, there were signs of spring all over the property. If you look very closely you will see daffodils poking through the ground above. I knew once the snow was gone something would be alive under there!

By the greenhouse door the ground cover is still green. The gravel after snowplowing can be removed later. The two chickens that didn't make it in before the snow fell seemed to have survived also.
We don't know what was under the deck , but the dogs managed to dig a big hole by the steps in search of something that gave off a powerful scent. I was just glad it wasn't a skunk. JEJ suspects Annie and Shelby were after a mouse. It is amazing how you miss that smell of dirt. These tulips have a bit of a head start. We forced them in the greenhouse and hope to see blooms soon. I saw a robin, the dogs tracked in mud, and JEJ started finishing the truck port. Signs of spring are all around! I better order some garden seeds!

School Carnival: An Annual Tradition

Our school holds a carnival every year as a fundraiser. I love it because it brings the whole community together and it also allows our middle school and high school students to plan, decorate, and pull off an evening of fun, tradition, and memories for the younger children of the community. Being a K-12 school it is certainly an endeavor that involves most students and staff. A big part of the yearly carnival is Bingo. Bingo is big in our community and the Senior Class each year runs Bingo in the cafeteria from the beginning of the carnival at 5:00 until the prizes run out, which was about 9:45 when I finally left this evening. The seniors also man the concessions, which provides dinner and snacks for everyone attending the big event.
The middle school students ran many booths this year. I think my students have as much fun running the booths as the little children that are lined up for the chance to win a prize.
The hoop shoot contest is another popular event and each year students and community members try to make the record for the most consecutive shots. The record that had been held for five years was broken tonight by another community member. I love that the records are held and broken by guys closer to my age than this student of mine above. The younger competitors sit back and let their elders take the spotlight. Talk about one generation learning from another! Each high school class chooses king and queen candidates and the classes sell raffle tickets. The king and queen represent the class that sells the most raffle tickets. I didn't win a shopping spree to Northtown Mall, but I did get some great pictures of my former students. One was crowned queen and the other is a princess. One of my students that was working hard took time to show his ultimate coolness.
These students are never camera shy when they see me coming. I know we made a big profit tonight, which helps in supporting athletics, academic functions, cultural events, and field trips. Although I enjoyed it all, I was ready by 10:00 for a bit of quiet in front of the laptop at home.

A Thursday Thirteen Meme

Thirteen Mishaps That Happened Yesterday in a Three Hour Period of Time!

1) A student was walking by the front table of the classroom and hit the cord to the projector attached to the document camera. The projector hit the floor.
2) He picked it up and I tried it again... it seemed to work... but no light.
3)The tech guy came and couldn't fix it so he took it away.
4) He said it will be at least a week before a new bulb comes.
5) I got out my old overhead projector, dug out my dusty overhead transparencies, and tried to get ready to teach the sixth graders. They came in and one said ," I haven't seen one of those since fourth grade! "( two years ago.... we are talking "old school" here)
6) A few minutes into the lesson on writing color poems the bulb burned out.
7) I went to get the treats I had for two birthday students. For the life of me I swear those gummy bears grew legs and walked. They were nowhere to be found and I still haven't found them!
8) After class I went down the hall and picked up another older overhead projector. The glass on the top had come loose and it fell and shattered all over the floor. At this point another teacher backed away and said, " I don't want to stand next to you."
9) Some girls decided to use a bit more glitter than required to decorate their creative writing. As they were ready to head out the door before conferences I noticed glitter in their hair and on their cheeks, and also watched a trail form as they skipped down the hall.
10) Another overhead was found, but in setting it up the electric pencil sharpener fell off the table right before parent conferences were to begin and spilled shaving everywhere.
11) Juice was delivered to our room for refreshments and we were told " the container may leak a little" . Everyone barred me from going near the juice.
12) I went to hang up a few of the "glittery" papers and ended up covering myself with a sparkly mess also.
13) As I swept up glass, wiped off glitter and moved away from the juice three parents with children showed up a half hour early for their conferences. I tried to hide the dust pan and get the last of the glitter out of my eye as I smiled and greeted them.
What else could go wrong? From the corner of my eye I saw a student through the window that stayed after school to wait for his mom. He was aiming a handmade arrow held in a handmade bow he had made from a willow branch. I could only hope he was out there by himself.

Of What Surrounds Me

Of What Surrounds Me

Whatever it is I am saying, I always
need a leaf or a flower, if not an
entire field. As for sky, I am so wildly
in love with each day’s inventions, cool blue
or cat gray or full
of the ships of clouds, I simply can’t
say whatever it is I am saying without
at least one skyful. That leaves water, a
creek or a well, river or ocean, it has to be
there. For the heart to be there. For the pen
to be poised. For the idea to come.

Facing the Facts

Facing the Facts

-Judith Viorst

I'm facing the fact that
I'll never write Dante's Inferno
Or paint a Picasso
Or transplant a kidney
Or build an empire,
Nor will I ever run Israel or Harvard,
Appear on the cover of Time,
Star on Broadway,
Be killed by a firing squad for some noble ideal,
Find the answer
To racial injustice or whether God's dead
Or the source
Of human unhappiness
Alter the theories of Drs.
S. Freud, C.G Jung, or A. Einstein
Or maybe the course
Of history.
In addition to which
I am facing the fact that
I'll never compose Bach cantatas,
Design Saint Laurents,
Advise presidents, head U.S. Steel,
Resolve the Mideast,
Be the hostess of some major talk show,
Or cure the cold.
And although future years may reveal
Some hidden potential,
Some truly magnificent act that
I've yet to perform,
Or some glorious song to be sung
For which I'll win prizes and praise,
I must still face the fact that
They'll never be able to say,
"And she did it so young".

from How Did I Get To Be Forty and Other Atrocities by Judith Viorst

This poem stayed with me long after I read it. Of course I know that God isn't dead, but sometimes I wonder about hidden potential and magnificent acts.... not just for me, but for many. Since people in my generation are going to live to at least 100... we are just beginning our adulthood! There is much to do and so much time.
