Peaches

A mouthful of language to swallow:
stretches of beach, sweet clinches,
breaches in walls, pleached branches;
britches hauled over haunches;
hunched leeches, wrenched teachers.
What English can do: ransack
the warmth that chuckles beneath
fuzzed surfaces, smooth velvet
richness, plashy juices.
I beseech you, peach,
clench me into the sweetness
of your reaches.
-Peter Davison
Beautiful words for a juicy, delicious subject.

    mmm... peach pie! The peach crop isn't expected to be very good around here this year due to a cold spring and dry summer. I might wind up buying peaches at the supermarket, just to have peach pie.

  4. Did you ever hear the Presidents of the United States' song "Peaches"? It came out when I was in high school and I loved it.

    Off-topic: I loved "Digging For Keys." Beautiful! Made me think of my Grandma's craft store. I just loved to look for treasures in the backroom of her store. She saves everything and I was always finding the kinds of odds and ends you described. Beautiful!

  8. Janet: I agree, there is nothing like fresh peach pie!
    MD: I haven't heard that song. I will have to find it online. when I hear RP read my poem, it doesn't even seem like it is mine. The idea came from those treasures like you spoke of in the craft store.
    LaTeaDah: As I said on your blog, thanks so much for the award.
    Tori: The same think
    happened to me. They were huge, juicy peaches. I hate bad peaches. ):
    Ah Ashley... it sounds like we both have a long list of books to read. I used to love to stay up late into the night when I was younger. Now I fall asleep. Darn!
